Project 1C: Reclaimed Architecture
A Dance Annex

Project 1C involves designing a two-story Dance House Annexe to preserve Malacca’s native dance culture. The standalone structure (350–450 sqm) will extend the Encore Melaka Theatre, hosting dance programs and public activities. Besides, we will also choose between two sites: a reclaimed coastal area (Strait-Site) or a canal-side location (Park-Site). The design must follow universal accessibility principles and build on previous project methods.

In this final project, we need to design a dance annex for different peranakans. Since we chose traditional Chinese contemporary dance in project 1A, our peranakan is baba nyonya. Derived from project 1A and 1B, I used the evolution process from baba nyonya traditional dance to contemporary dance as the main concept of my dance annex.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities

In this final project, my discipline-specific knowledge was put to the test. I used this skill to design the building, focusing on how to express my concept and integrate the poetic element that was essential for the project. My lifelong learning ability also played a big role. I conducted case studies to better understand the design goals and constantly refined my ideas—thinking about how to express my concept, design functional spaces, and ensure users could navigate the building smoothly. Since this semester’s focus was on public buildings, I also developed my citizenship and global perspective. The design needed to accommodate a variety of users, including tourists, dancers, and people with disabilities, which required me to consider and meet the needs of different groups thoughtfully.
