Project 3: Designing with Architectural Principles, Materiality, Context & User

For this final project, I need to build on the design ideas and construction methods from my previous assignment, applying them to a more complex program. My task is to propose a small freestanding structure that interacts with the natural landscape. The focus is on interpreting and synthesizing the relationship between the user, site, and function in architectural design. My design must showcase how I apply architectural principles, materiality, constructability, and context to create a memorable spatial experience for the user.

For this final project, I’m expanding on our earlier work by designing a hideout retreat in TBNSA tailored specifically for me and my friends, all of whom are parkour enthusiasts. The retreat will be a haven where we can comfortably stay for 2 to 3 days, immersing ourselves in adventure and exploration. The design will reflect our passion for parkour and the thrill of discovery, providing a unique and exhilarating space that complements our adventurous lifestyle while offering a relaxing escape in the heart of nature.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities

1.1
Able to put theories into practice

3.2
Define and analyze problems to arrive at effective solution

7.1
Be aware of and form opinions from diverse perspectives

This project has been a valuable experience in applying theoretical knowledge to practical design challenges. By translating concepts into the actual design of the hideout retreat, I learned how to bridge the gap between theory and practice effectively. I also had to define and analyze various problems, such as integrating parkour elements into the retreat while ensuring comfort and functionality. This process involved considering diverse perspectives, including the needs of my parkour enthusiast friends and the natural context of the site. Through this project, I developed a deeper understanding of how to formulate well-rounded solutions by balancing different viewpoints and addressing multiple factors in the design process.
