Project 1B:
Site Chronicle + Visceral

Project 1B is a group project focused on exploring a site and its surroundings to capture its essence and spirit (Genius Loci). We will document our findings in The (Site) Chronicle using photography, sketches, CAD, and models. These insights will guide The Visceral, where the site’s atmosphere is integrated into the design. This builds on methods from Project 1A and prepares for Project 1C with a real-world design approach.

The Chronicle Books

Our site is located at Encore Melaka. To complete the chronicle book, the Semester 3 students were divided into six roles: geographer, surveyor, model maker, historian, researcher, and journalist. I was assigned the role of surveyor, where I measured the length and slope of the site. I then used CAD to create a blueprint, so everyone could refer to the standard dimensions of the site. After everyone finished their tasks and added their findings, we successfully compiled all the information into the chronicle book about the site.

Visceral Board

The Visceral Board is a visual representation of the direction we’re taking with our project. It’s mainly based on our site visit and the insights we gained from understanding the site. The board helps guide our next steps, providing a clear direction for Project 1C.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities

The first key skills I tested in this project were thinking and problem-solving. For example, in Task 1 (the chronicle book), I acted as a surveyor. When we couldn’t gather accurate measurements, I had to find alternative solutions to ensure our drawings were completed smoothly. In Task 2 (the visceral board), I had to figure out how to effectively capture the site’s genius loci and communicate our direction and story clearly. Communication skills were also critical since both tasks were group efforts, requiring clear and transparent collaboration. Lastly, digital literacy played a big role. As someone not very experienced with design software, I relied on online resources and tutorials to learn the basics, allowing me to create site drawings and edit the visceral board effectively.
