Assignment 1:
Contextual Study Sketch Journal

In this assessment, we are required to conduct a physical site visit to one of the traditional street within Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, or George Town to study its unique context. We analyzed aspects like religious buildings, architectural style, historical events, local cuisine and more. We then created an A4 sketch journal with 8 pages of sketches and a site plan, each sketch titled and annotated. Afterward, we wrote a 300-word handwritten summary reflecting on the visit, focusing on a theme that represents the local character and its changes due to modernization. The expected outcome was to show our understanding of how these contexts shape the place's identity and mastered the ability to analyzed the different context in the street.

Site contextual sketch journal of Jalan Tun H.S Lee, including physical and non-physical context of Jalan Tun H.S Lee & my personal experience and emotions when i visited Jalan Tun H.S Lee

This assignment turned out to be my favorite in the module because it included a physical site visit. I visited Jalan Tun HS Lee, and before the visit, I thought it would be boring since I was approaching it as just another homework assignment. However, it was actually a lot more enjoyable and interesting than I expected. Being a student with the task of exploring the street helped me appreciate its various buildings and cultures. One part of the assignment involved hand-drawing the street’s physical and non-physical contexts, which really improved my drawing skills. I used to struggle with hand-drawing, but now I feel much more confident. I also learned to better distinguish between physical and non-physical contexts, which was something I initially found confusing. Next time, I hope to understand the site’s unique architecture and culture before visiting, so I can grasp the meaning behind it more easily, and continue to improve my hand-drawing skills to make my sketches more vivid.
