Project 1A: Poetic Assemblage
Choreography + Envelope
This project focuses on teamwork and creativity, combining research with inspiration from bodily movements and emotions. We will observe and study a native culture-inspired modern dance, document the movements through detailed drawings (plans and elevations), and understand the dance’s meaning through reading and observation. Using this inspiration, We will need to design a creative and expressive structure for a Pas de Deux (a duet performance) that captures the dance’s movements, emotions, and significance.
Choreographic Ethnography
Project 1 was the most impressive for me because, unlike other architecture projects, it combined dance and design. We had to watch a dance video, choreograph a dance, and then use the movements from the dance we created to design a structure that could accommodate two dancers performing in it. This project allowed me to think about space and movement in a new and creative way.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities

In this project, we were assessed on various aspects of our abilities. The first was our basic discipline-specific knowledge. For instance, although we initially struggled to fully understand the requirements of the brief, we eventually gained clarity and successfully completed the project. Additionally, as this was a group project, it was essential to ensure that every team member understood their tasks and contributed effectively to the completion of the project, which tested our interpersonal skills. Lastly, I believe the most crucial skill was our thinking and problem-solving ability. Since Project 1 required us to use dancers’ postures and movements to design a structure for them to perform in, this skill was critical. It allowed us to continuously consider the needs of the dancers, enabling us to create a design that fulfilled their requirements.
