Assignment 1:
Cultural Mapping + Site Study
Cultural Mapping:
In groups of 5, we are required to study a heritage street in Kuala Lumpur, researching its background, hidden stories, and layout. We will select a heritage building to analyze its history and facade. The 25-30 slide presentation must include cultural mapping, a street and building study, a timeline, and conservation suggestions supported by ICOMOS and JWN principles and precedent studies.
Site Study:
Individually, we are required to analyze 2 precedent studies of buildings similar in size or condition to the selected heritage building. The analysis should include a comparison of conservation methods, charters, theories, and practices, referencing ICOMOS and JWN, and provide an overall conclusion and outcome analysis based on the findings.
Cultural Mapping + Site Study
In this project, we were assigned as the research site of Jalan Tun HS Lee and selected one of the most historical landmark, Junk Book Store, as our research building. So this slideshow will present the cultural map and introduction of Jalan Tun HS Lee North and the building we studied, including the tangible and intangible significance of the site and street.
Individual Precedent Study
In this individual precedent study, we were required to analyze two different heritage buildings to examine their methods and processes for conserving facades. So I choose Chinatown Heritage Center, Singapore and Sekeping Kong Heng, Ipoh. This helped us gain a foundational understanding of the sequence of conservation steps and techniques. Additionally, it provided valuable insights that made it easier to approach and understand the requirements of Assignment 2.
Taylor's Graduate Capabilities

This assignment challenged many of our skills. As a group project, it required us to communicate effectively with teammates, utilizing our interpersonal skills. The site visit also tested our abilities, particularly when engaging with local residents to gather site data. This involved strong communication skills, as well as citizenship and global perspective to ensure the data we collected was accurate.
For the individual precedent study, we applied our discipline-specific knowledge and intrapersonal skills to find relevant examples of facade conservation methods, making sure the data we gathered was reliable and precise.
